About the academy
Hello, and welcome to The Academy of Music.
I am Dr. Mark Hornbaker, and for most of my life, music has been both my passion and my purpose.
I started this academy to share the joy of music with others — whether you’re sitting at the piano for the first time or returning to lessons after many years. Over the decades, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students from every background and age group, and what continues to inspire me is seeing the spark that music brings into people’s lives.
My Background
I’m a composer, pianist, and vocal coach, and I’ve spent years performing, writing, and arranging music across styles — from classical and sacred to modern and original compositions.
Piano has always been my main instrument and teaching focus, but I’ve also loved helping singers discover their true voice and develop the confidence to perform.
As a composer, I’m fascinated by how music tells stories. I bring that same storytelling spirit into my lessons — helping each student learn not just to play or sing, but to express what’s inside them.
My Approach to Teaching
Every student is unique, so every lesson is tailored to their individual needs. Some people require structure and precision, while others learn best through creativity and exploration. My goal is to meet you where you are and help you move forward — step by step.
We’ll work on:
-
Solid technique and healthy habits at the piano or with the voice
-
Reading music and understanding theory in a way that makes sense
-
Building confidence for performances and auditions
-
Developing musicality — phrasing, emotion, and interpretation
Most importantly, I want each lesson to be something you look forward to. Music should challenge you, but it should also bring joy.
